This tribe is represented, especially in the tropics. Mallards are closely related to mallards, which they resemble in feeding patterns and, in some cases, mating behavior; In other ways, they resemble shelducks. Some have bony crests on the underside of the wings, many species display white wing spots and black wings. Drakes are larger than chickens and generally have bright patterns, sometimes in metallic colors.

The most famous among the ducks of prey are: the North American wood duck (Aix sponsa), or Carolina duck, and its Asian relative, the Mandarin duck (A. galericulata), but the special wear; and the Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata), from Mexico to Peru and Uruguay. The water duck is one of the 20 species of the tribe Mergini and Somateriini. The term is quite appropriate, although some birds frequent both inland and coastal waters. Ducks of the tribe Mergini include the Bufflehead (Bucephala, or Glaucionetta, albeola), closely related to the Bufflehead (B., or G., clangula); soldiers; squaw (Clangula hyemalis); and scoters (Melanitta, or Oidemia, species).
